Self-checkout and especially Scan & Go will find its way into stationary retail in all sectors in 2022. The presence is particularly evident in food retailing and the drugstore sector. However, there are numerous other application areas that fly under the radar and do not enjoy any attention.

Why Hardware Stores?

Differences to Food Retail & Drugstore

The sweet spot of a Scan & Go installation and thus the greatest benefit for customers is certainly in the area of FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods). The self-determination of shopping in combination with the type of products results in the best shopping experience for end customers: Small-item shopping baskets can be better overviewed in terms of price through Scan & Go. Shopping is seamless and convenient.

In the home improvement and garden supply sectors, average basket values are much higher than in grocery or drug stores. Items are larger and often heavier. There is less small-scale shopping. In addition, there are exceptional cases, such as cut goods. But it is precisely these differences that also lead to an outstanding shopping experience with Scan & Go in the DIY store environment.

Advantages of Scan & Go in the hardware store

As already mentioned, many parts in the hardware store are large and definitely of weight. With a self-scanning solution, these products no longer have to be brought to a busy checkout and scanned again by cashiers. Even with fewer products and higher shopping cart values, it is of great benefit to have an overview of the total cost at all times. The seamless shopping experience is also found in the hardware store. Especially during the season, when stores are bursting at the seams with capacity, Scan & Go makes shopping a pleasant experience.

In particular, the employees who normally staff the checkout counters are once again able to provide customers with detailed advice thanks to Scan & Go.

Our solution

We link digital and stationary services of the retailer to make it as easy as possible for customers to realize their projects.

First, we support the project with an active conception and focus on the implementation of the project phases. Our expertise in the specifics of DIY, hardware and building materials sector come together here and play an important role in consulting, planning and, solving technical, as well as professional challenges.

Whether it is IT support for the retailer, e.g. to take account of customer-specific import formats and special delivery units, or consultation on the marketing side, we find the right joint solution.

Best Practice

Following in the footsteps of Pflanzen Kölle, a Germany-wide retailer of plants, garden supplies and furniture, as well as small animals and pet supplies, other traditional DIY and building materials retailers are establishing Scan & Go in their stores. Most recently, building materials retailer Leinweber Baucentrum installed the Snabble self-checkout solution in its stores.

Leinweber is a pioneer in the digitization of the building materials business and already established so-called building materials boxes in the Fulda area.

Building materials can be ordered from Leinweber and are then delivered to the site in the appropriate box. The boxes are supplied with new orders twice a day. Customers can then pick up their orders within 24 hours.

Snabble has already gained a great deal of experience in DIY, hardware, building materials and garden supplies sectors through the successful integration of best practices. New retailers interested in a Scan & Go solution can and will only benefit from this. We will be announcing the next major collaboration next month.
